Let’s See How You Measure Up

A Fly-through of what all those questionnaires and tests in organizations are really for, and how to distinguish wheat from chaff as an HR professional or manager.

Organizations are flooded with dozens of personality and other questionnaires. These might tell you that you’re an Achiever or Woo, stars and lords, red or blue, INFJ or ENTP, highly conscientious or extremely indecisive. They promise us self-awareness, an understanding of who we are and how it manifests in our work, in our collaboration with others, or how it predisposes us for our future careers. The abundance of these self-assessment tools is both fascinating and terrifying. Among them, you’ll find high-quality psychometrically backed tools, compromise solutions that work if you squint a little, and then pure charlatanism that could easily be replaced by coffee grounds reading or basic horoscope interpretation. The market for these “little tests” is a juicy business, so HR professionals and managers are constantly approached by vendors offering intriguing tools that will supposedly enlighten their employees about who they are and what they’re suited or unsuited for. And most of these tools cost money and time. These investments should pay off after using any of these helpers. But for that to happen, HR professionals and managers need to be able to easily ask the right questions about a new method and know when and why to say yes or no.

In Beáta Holá’s presentation, you’ll learn what you need to understand as a user without needing a master’s degree in psychology, including:

  • What different tools actually measure.
  • Whether there is one best tool that rules them all.
  • In which phases of working with people it makes sense to use them.
  • How to recognize a tool with high validity from another horoscope alternative.
  • What are the most common mistakes HR professionals and managers make when working with tests and questionnaires, and how to avoid them.
  • How to squeeze the most out of tools for mapping human potential.
